In the moment of the creation of the department, was taken as symbol the same flan, that was being used by the la Guajira Intendancy, which colors are green and white with equal dimensions by order 28 from 1966 November 29.
Then was modified by the order 052 from 1994.
The green color represents the hope of the agricultures on the crop and growing of the cultivations always green
The white color represents the purity of the native race, pacific and noble, as well as the richness of the department, represented on the pearls and the salt.
