Milestones on Palanquero History

On Sunday August 27, 1933 was officially inaugurated by the president of the republic, the national airport of La Dorada “Olaya Herrera”. Later and in honor to the memory of a great Captain, was named “Central Air Base German Olano”, today is known as the Combat Air Commander No 1 – Air Base Captain German Olano.
On 1943 appear for first time over the skies in Palanquero, coming from Guabito the advance trainer Texan T-6, with the purpose to reinforce the air operations in the unit.

On 1946, arrive from Guabito, the bomber aircrafts F-47 and the bombers B-25 and B.26.

Arrival of the T-33 aircrafts

Silver Star T-33 Aircraft: the 1954 marks an important step for the country and for the national aviation. The Air Force, introduce to Colombia the first reaction Jet aircrafts. Six units T-33 Silver Star, bought to the United States, land this years on the Colombian runways, after a flight on which were bring from Panama by the military pilots: Captain Antonio Robayo, Lieutenant Eduardo Escalante, Lieutenant Leopoldo Piedrahita, Lieutenant Ramiro Echavarria, Lieutenant Pedro Ramirez and Lieutenant Oscar Acero. The Jet era arrives to Colombia across the Air Force that will keep the exclusivity of this operation during six years, until Avianca incorporates at its service for the international routes the Boeing 720, in 1961. These aircrafts were retired from service on 1990, after a history of triumphs and satisfactions on its air operation.

Marquetalia operation

On June 14, 1964, in accomplish to the Marquetalia Operation, inside the Plan that was named “Cabeza”, in honor of the Lieutenant Colonel Luis M Cabeza (r.i.p.) were done the air tactical support missions with the Jet aircrafts on combat missions and helicopters on transport missions. To do it, since the day before were located in Neiva with the purpose to reinforce the material in charge of the GRAT (Air tactical Group), 4 medium helicopters. Were used 10 combat aircrafts T-33, F-80 and F-86, using the rockets and machineguns wreaking the objective.

Since the 10:00 hours are suspended the mission due the bad weather conditions in the operation areas.

On June 18, 1964, ended the Operation Cabezas, was done the national flag rise, in the municipality of Marquetalia, in lieu with the FAC and VI brigade flags; to exalt the act, was done an air show with four T-33 and F-80 aircrafts.

Visit of Mario Moreno “Cantiflas”

On August 21, 1964, by invitation and thanks to the effort of Lieutenant Colonel Jose M Calderon M, in charge of the base command, visited the unit the Mexican actor Mario Moreno Cantiflas, in lieu with a group of actors, who made a presentation to the personnel of the Unit.

Arrival of Venezuelan aircrafts

On December 4, 1964, in the morning land on the unit 4 Canberra aircrafts and 4 F-86 aircrafts from the Venezuelan Air Force, that goes to Peru to participate on the operation Ayacucho. The base gave the fuel and fixes one of the F-86 aircrafts.

Arrival of the M-5 aircrafts

On the morning of January 1, 1972, the Hercules C-130 FAC 1001 lands on the Palanquero base, with the Mirage-5 FAC 3024; months later, as result of the work of the French and national technicians, was schedule for the 20 and 21 of March the test of the first aircraft and the arrival of the others. In this form are the firsts to cross the skies in Colombia the aircrafts had the registers 3024, 3021 and 3025.

The first victim of the supersonic aviation

The first victim on a mirage: on August 12, 1972, is accidented the Mirage-5 aircraft 3025, commanded by Captain Guillermo Diaz Muñoz, when exploit one of the wheels of the main train during the take off taxiing, being the first victim of the supersonic military aviation on our Air Force.

Arrival of the equipment A-37B

On December 15, 1978 arrive from the United States the first two A-37 aircrafts bought by the country. Such aircrafts were pilot by members of the American Air Force.

On November 17, 1980 arrive from the Randolph Air Base (San Antonio Texas), the A-37 FAC 2157, 2159, 2161 pilot by the Captains Arturo Dueñas, Lieutenant Jorge Uribe Castro and Second Lieutenant Julio Gonzalez.

On December 12, 1980, arrive the A-37 FAC 2153, 2156, 2160, 2162, pilot by the Captains Arturo Dueñas, Lieutenant Jorge Parga, Lieutenant Julio Gonzalez and Lieutenant Jaime Acevedo.

Orion Plan

On December 22, 1979, and in accomplish to the orders of the National Defense Ministry, the Cacom-1 send to the San Andres Island 2 T-37C aircrafts and 2 A-37 aircrafts, with the purpose to patrol the Cays de Serrana, Roncador and Quitasueños, in front to the pretensions and unknowing of the Nicaragua government over the Colombia sovereignty in that region.

600 anniversary of the Liberator death

on December 17, 1980, due to the 600 years of the death of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, was done in Santa Martha an air show, in which Cacom-1 participates with 13 M-5 aircrafts pilot by the:

Also participates as escort of the presidential aircraft on a flight Bogota – Santa Martha, two A-37B aircrafts, with the crew composed by Lieutenant Jorge Parga P and Lieutenant Julio A Gonzalez R.

Decoration Silver Cross to Cacom-1

The Chancellor of the Boyaca order certifies that by decree No 2951 from October 20, 1983, the Republic President give to the Air Base German Olano the decoration Silver Cross of the Boyaca Order register under the number 5530.

Visit of Pope Juan Pablo II to Cacom-1

On July 6, 1986, the Pope Juan Pablo II, visited the Cacom-1 due to it was designed a plate that is located in the operative zone close to the offices of the control and command center.

In the chapel office regional Cacom-1 is framed the invocation to Lord Jesus done by the Pope during his visit, also is the pen with which was signed the invocation First Pilots of K-fir.

On March 10, 1989, in accomplish to the project K-fir, the FAC command program and select a group of pilots who travel to Israel with the purpose to execute the training course needed for the operation of such equipments. This course last one month and a half and the pilots were:

Arrival of the first modernized M-5 aircraft

On April 20, 1989, arrives to the unit the first Mirage 5 aircraft modernized in Israel (FAC 3029). Between the sophisticated equipments with which counts, we could highlight:

• Automatic Arms delivery and navigation system (WDNS)
• Flight refueling System
• Implementation of two additional hard points, for more charge on armament
• Unique take for refuel
• Sustentation Additional Surfaces (CANARD), for better maneuver on flight on low speeds

Arrival of the first K-fir

On April 28, 1989, arrives the first K-fir aircraft of a total of 6, distinguish with the number FAC 3045

Operation Colombia

On December 10, 1990 K-fir and Mirage 5 combat aircrafts, conformed the fleets Cobra (Lieutenant Colonel Gonzalo Morales Forero, Major Flavio E Ulloa E, Captain Rafael Velosa A), Apolo (Major Miguel Camacho M, Captain Eliades Moreno, Captain Miguel A Barrera) and the Element Gorila (Captain Hugo Acosta, Captain Juan C Velez), and bomber the Casa Verde in the military operation of weaken of the zone to permit the entrance of the surface troops to the area and in this form break the mythic created by the Farc, the operational resume n of the mission was the following: 30 exits, 186 bombs, and 15:25 flight hours.

First flight refueling

On November 13, 1991, for first time in the Air Force, with Colombian aircrafts and crews was done the flight refueling exercise, the tanker aircraft FAC 1201 was pilot by the Lieutenant Colonel Fernando Soler and the first aircraft to execute the Hook Up was the M-5 FAC 3024, pilot by Captain Miguel A Barrera D, at an altitude of 12000 feet and a speech of 270 knots, later the exercise was done by Major Juan C Ramirez, Captain Jorge A Suarez (r.i.p.), Major Fernando Medrano, Major Flavio E Ulloa, Captain Juan C Velez and Captain Ram Brier from the Israel Air Force.

Night attack capacity

On the 1992, the Cacom 1 predicting the future of the internal conflict, begin a new era, launching for first time over the Palanquero shooting field on nigh conditions, practice bombs. Today the unit counts with the capacity of immediate answer and during the 24 hours.

Supersonic aircraft speed record

On 1994, Captain Juan Fernando Correa Hernandez, impose the speed record of the Colombian air force flying 1.98 times quicker than the sound velocity (1200 kilometers per hour) on a K-fir FAC 3049. Until today this record has not been overcome.

First test of the laser guide system

On 1996 were done for first time over the Chelenchele polygon the real tests with an inertial bomb of the laser guide system with which counts the FAC with an accuracy of the 100%

Air Mystic medal

As per Act No 16 from the Council on July 29, 1998 the Retire Officers Association of the Colombian Air Force (Asorfac) gave to the Cacom-1 the medal “Air Mystic” for the great services gave to the institution.

First real attack with the laser guide system

On the 2002 was done the first operation of a real attack, using the Laser Guide System against the Ont-Farc, on a bridge over the Cafre river, that was one of the main mobility corridors between the distension zone and the rest of the country. Across this, they execute terrorists attacks and then find refugee on the demilitarized territory. The result of the operation was the total destruction of this clandestine construction.

First launching of a Phyton 3 war missile

On July 20, 2004 was launched the first war missile Phyton 3 from a K-fir aircraft, to a simulated target on the Colombian Pacifico, with an accuracy of the 100%, reaffirming the capacity of the Cacom-1 for the defense of the national sovereignty and the territorial integrity.

Fist woman pilot flying a twin engine Jet combat aircraft

On March 2005, for first time a woman in the Colombian history, graduates as a combat pilot of a twin Jet (T-37 B/C), the Lieutenant Joana Ximena Herrera.

First woman navigator

The first woman navigator and operator of the special equipments of the FAC, has flown as navigator on the equipment AC-47T, Sky Master and Caravan.

First woman flying a Mirage 5 on the back seat, in condition of specialist on armament and navigator, on a recognize flight over the area of Palanquero on October 31, 2001.

The first instruction and training track in International Humanitarian Law on the armed conflicts.

Began the construction and endow phase of the terrain on February 2004, needing the continual work of 50 people (officers, NCOs, soldiers and civilians) for 20 days.

This track is built on the Cacom 1, with the intension to give practical capacitating to all the FAC crews and the visitors, about the main norms of the International Humanitarian Law applied to the internal conflict that lived our country.

Cacom-1 counts with an infrastructure unique for this kind of instruction, qualified personnel and over all the compromise of men and women, which main objective is to keep and improve the imagine of our institution and the legality in front to the armed conflict that confronts the country.

In the phase of preparation, counts with the work of 7 officers, 1 NCO, 19 soldiers, and 3 civilians, in where were created 5 situation that are lived in the internal Colombian conflict, were recreated 6 scenarios.

First center for the military instruction of the FAC

On April 8, 2005 was inaugurated in cacom1 the first center for military instruction for the FAC that has the responsibility to instruct and train all the military personnel of the institution on the combats courses, such as: counter-guerrilla, parachuting, security and defense of air bases, survivor, among others.

This works cost $4.322.536.197.55, and was done on 155 days, the design was done by the Major Alvaro Garzon, from the FAC Installation Direction.
